Color and finishes

Matte, satin, velvet or ... what kind of finish is the best choice?
If the choice depends, of course, on everyone’s different tastes, it will also depend on how the room will be used, the surface to be painted as well as the level of upkeep required.
Furthermore, the same color could, depending on the finish chosen, appear different

Matte paint
Matte paint
Matte paint absorbs light without reflecting it back which gives it the advantage of masking small surface defects. A matte finish accentuates simplicity and brings out an ambiance that is cozy and always very contemporary.  Because it elicits an understated, subdued effect, matte is ideal for living rooms or adult bedrooms. But due to its texture which is somewhat rough, this kind of paint is not suggested for high-traffic areas (entrance, hallway), in children’s rooms or bathrooms (where there is a higher risk of stains).
Matte paint is especially good at highlighting soft and neutral tones as well as very saturated ones.

Satin paint
Satin paint
Satin finish is shock and stain resistant and easy to care which currently makes it the paint most widely used, especially for humid rooms and high-traffic areas.  Its satin quality, falling somewhere between matte and glossy, reflects light suggesting a look and feel that is both silky and warm.  Be careful to properly prepare any underlying layers before applying this paint; the fact that it reflects light may reveal defects in your walls.
Satin enhances all tints, whether they are pastel, medium or dark, fresh or shaded.

Velvet paint
Velvet paint
This kind of paint is a nice alternative to mat and satin because it offers all the advantages of a satin finish (good resistance and easy care/upkeep/maintenance)
Shock resistant, velvet paint adapts to all rooms of the house and its velvety quality covers up blemishes.
Velvet paint is particularly effective in enhancing dark hues to create a cozy atmosphere

Glossy paint
Glossy paint
Light reflects on a glossy surface (all the more if you use a lacquer that will give the feeling of making a space seem larger). Using this kind of paint requires properly preparing painting surfaces before it can be applied.
Highly resistance, glossy paint is as well suited for bathrooms as it is for rooms that have little light.  To avoid appearing too flashy, this kind of paint is best used it to compliment other features (matte, satin or velvet) as opposed to being the basis of a room’s overall appearance.
Glossy paint is especially effective at highlighting vivid and dark hues.
